The tallest sunflower in Maple Grove’s second-grade classroom is not the one students predicted. Over four weeks, partners have measured stems, sketched leaves, and compared plants placed at different distances from the window.
The project gives students a reason to practice measurement and descriptive writing. When two plants grew differently, the class returned to its notes instead of deciding one result must be wrong. Students are now making a shared chart of what changed and what stayed the same.
Families can see the journals during fall conferences on October 20. Ask your child which plant surprised them and what they would change in the next investigation.
